Chapter Ten Heart of Gold

Merina couldn’t have done any of the moves on purpose. She was too relaxed at the workstation she’d built for herself. Too eased into the way she’s always done it. Upon returning from his bout with pain that went all the way to his groin, he found her hair in a twist behind her head and her neck exposed. She had a tattoo.

“What does the tree mean?”

She “hmmed” under her breath before sitting straight and smiling at her work. He asked again and was forced to point out what he was referring too.

“Oh. Independence. Men try to rule. Women truly need to understand their abilities better. Men can be ruled if done so the right way.”

“Really?” he chuckled. “Tell me. How is it done?”

She touched her finger to her temple. “Tut. Tut. Tut. For me to know and for you to find out.”

This female was a puzzle. Unlocking her would take more than one lifetime and fortunately, Core that plenty of those. He’d settle for one with her.

“Where are the knives?” He forced the subject away before he said something to run her off. In all honesty, he should leave. Let her live her life. After three days of not seeing her, he selfishly made his way to her again. Core couldn’t call her a disease with her luscious body and beautiful eyes that reminding him of the sky on a cloudless day, but she’d plagued him day and night since her last parting. His biggest fear was not her running when she found out what he was, but if he could make her happy.

The sharpening took only five minutes. Afterward, he had nothing else he could do to keep busy except watch her, a defining factor he’d hoped the evening would require. Her rear was still propped in the air as she sanded away the hard edges of the oak, the tree she chose as a symbolism to her independence on the back of her neck. “Oak is a strong wood. The symbol used for an independent mind. I find sometimes that endurance and determination can be confused with the idea. I have seen past it and can know that there are fates in the world much worse than opening one self to another for loneliness is a bitter poison.”
